Life moves fast and you might too. Do you ever find yourself running around trying to do it all only to find that there will always more to add to the list? The carpet needs to be vacuumed. The bed needs to be made again. The “Thank You” cards should already be in the mail! You shouldn’t even be reading this blog post because there’s too much to do before bed. Stop it right now! There are many people out there that must get all of their work done before they take a moment of time to themselves. On the flip side, there are others that get out of bed thinking about every which way to avoid their to-do list and fill their time with anything but what they “should” be doing. Can we have a happy medium, please?

How can you enjoy life and take necessary down time to yourself while not avoiding the inevitable?

Since you can’t skip all of your chores, it’s more about finding a balance that doesn’t set you over the edge. Ask yourself these 10 questions:

  1. What’s most important to you?
  2. Is there a more efficient way to get your work done?
  3. What makes you the happiest in your home?
  4. What calms you down after a long day?
  5. Are there things on your to-do list that you can give up?
  6. How many things are you doing a day that need to be redone the next day?
  7. What are you doing to stay proactive with your plans?
  8. Do you have a schedule or calendar that helps you stay organized?
  9. Are you planning down time for yourself each day?
  10. Are you getting an adequate amount of sleep?

After you ask yourself these questions, take time to reflect upon your answers. Learn and grow from them. Do you think you need a more organized schedule? Do you think your schedule is bogging you down? Knowing yourself and understanding your limits is half the battle. Once you recognize that you need to do less and take time for YOU, you might find yourself better off in many ways.

What if your life is just too busy no matter what you do?

You might consider visiting with a family member or a friend to help you prioritize your time. It’s true that some people are doers to the core. Saying no and relaxing is probably hard for those people. But you literally have to force yourself to STOP and relax for at least 40 minutes per day. Let’s hope it is longer.

What can you do to relax and take alone time?

  1. Take a leisurely nap.
  2. Enjoy a warm bath.
  3. Go for a slow walk.
  4. Call a friend that has a calming personality.
  5. Sit on the couch and read an easy book or look at the pictures in a magazine.
  6. Do an art project.
  7. Relax and watch your favorite movie.
  8. Practice meditation.
  9. Try yoga or Thai chi.
  10. Spend time in the community garden.

It’s always a great reminder to take time for yourself. With this fast-paced world we now live in, it is hard to remember to do just that. The days and nights seem shorter. The list of to-do’s seems longer. Don’t forget about your down time. It’s probably one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself and others. Don’t overdo it. Don’t make excuses not to relax. Take ten deep breathes, pause and then get back in the game. It will still be waiting for you when you get there.
